Improper waste disposal remains a persistent challenge for many nations, leading to unhealthy environments and threatening sustainability, which in turn affects public health. Harper Malioboro Yogyakarta, a four-star hotel nestled in the heart of Yogyakarta, is deeply committed to environmental sustainability. The hotel has already implemented several eco-friendly initiatives, such as replacing plastic water bottles in rooms with glass bottles and providing water dispensers in corridors and rooms. Additionally, packaging used for guest amenities now employs biodegradable and recyclable materials.
To celebrate World Cleanup Day on September 20, 2024, Harper Malioboro Yogyakarta partnered with the World Cleanup Day Yogyakarta Community to host the "Trash to Treasure: Waste Exchange for Rewards" program on September 19, 2024, at the hotel premises. This initiative is a campaign aimed at raising awareness and encouraging community participation in recycling. Participants were invited to exchange dry and recyclable waste—such as plastic bottles, glass bottles, plastic bags, paper, and usable clothing—for attractive rewards.
The event, held from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM in the parking area of Harper Malioboro Yogyakarta, saw enthusiastic participation from residents of Yogyakarta and its surroundings. Attendees exchanged their waste for points, which were then entered into a raffle for various prizes. The primary goal of the program was to educate the community about the benefits of recycling, promote sustainable waste management practices, and foster a cleaner, healthier environment. Harper Malioboro Yogyakarta hopes that initiatives like this will contribute to creating a greener and more sustainable future.
